Types of Colorectal Surgery Explained in Detail
The most common treatment for an early stage of colorectalcancer is surgery. On the basis of the stage, the extent of the tumor, and its location, the doctor determines which type of surgery would be suitable for the patient. The three main types of surgery are open, laparoscopic, and robotics.
In the yester years, open surgery for colorectal cancer was the conventional method of removing the tumors. At Cancer Care Specialities, we have board certified surgeons who conduct minimally invasive colorectal surgery in Dubai. In the laparoscopic and robotic approaches, the doctors make smaller incisions and the recovery time is also minimal.
Laparoscopic Surgery – In this type of minimally invasive surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision in the abdominal cavity to insert surgical instruments. Along with it, a long thin lighted tube with a camera on the end known as laparoscope is also inserted. This instrument is used to transmit high resolution images of the abdominal cavity to a monitor in the operating room.
The surgical instruments are the extension of the surgeon’shands to operate the tumor. The monitor plays a vital role here as it helps the surgeon to observe the abdomen and manipulate the instruments so that they function properly. The resected tumor is then pulled out through one of the incisions.
Robotic Surgery – In the newly emerging robotic colorectal surgery, the surgeons make use of miniaturized instruments, operated with a console and a 3D camera to complete the operation. All these activities are performed by the robot while the doctor sits in a comfortable position. One key advantage is the enhanced precision, flexibility, and control.
Through the small incision, the surgical instruments are inserted under the complete control and guidance of the surgeons. Robotic surgery is generally costly and is often used along with laparoscopic methods.
Open Surgery – As the name surgery, doctors make a large cut in the abdomen to remove the tumor as well as nearby colon cells and lymph nodes.Further tests are conducted after few days of the operation to see if the cancer cells have been removed. Recovery time is usually longer than above two surgeries.
Types Of Colorectal Cancer Resection Surgeries
- Right hemicolectomy – In this surgery, the ascending colon and aportion of the transverse colonare removed. The end of the transverse colon is connected to the end of the small intestine.
- Sigmoid Colectomy – In this procedure, the diseased portion of the sigmoid colon is removed. Then, it is connected to the descending colon to the rectum.
- Lower Anterior Resection – In this procedure, the diseased portion of the rectum is removed and then reconnected it to the descending colon.
Before and After the Surgery
